Plant-Based Philly Cheesesteak

This recipe for Philly Cheesesteak is completely plant-based, and you’d never know!

Red meat has been classified by the World Health Organization as a Class 2A Carcinogen. Data shows that there is a positive relationship between high amounts of red meat consumption and certain cancers, like colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and others.

While you may not want to give red meat completely – and you likely don’t have to – you may consider swapping out red meat and swapping IN poultry, fish, or plant based.

Ingredients:

*Makes 4-5 sandwiches

  • 1 box of UNLIMEAT Korean BBQ Original
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 sweet red or orange bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 medium sweet onion or 1 large yellow onion, sliced
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 3 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp plant butter
  • 1 tbsp avocado oil
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp cumin
  • 1 slice of cheese per sandwich

Instructions:

  • Preheat your broiler.
  • In a large saucepan, add avocado oil and turn the heat to medium-low.
  • Add the onions and peppers.
  • Saute until tender.
  • Remove the onions and peppers and set them on a plate.
  • In the same pan, add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, 1/4 cup water, and spices. Mix to combine
  • Add the Unlimeat.
  • Cook together until the tomato paste mixture has reduced and the meat is seared on each side.
  • Optional: remove the meat and set it off to the side on a plate. Add butter to the pan and mix on low heat to pick up the spices at the bottom of the pan. Once the butter melts, add 1/2 cup water and keep whisking to create a lovely pan sauce.
  • Build the sandwich. On the bottom bun, add meat. Spoon over some pan sauce. Add sautéed onions and peppers.
  • Optional: add pickled jalapeños or banana peppers.
  • Add 1 slice of cheese.
  • Broil until bubbly.
  • Top with the other half of the bun.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Bon Appetit!
